Joint study by University of Lleida and Ferro shows Cr(VI) must be analyzed by ISO-19071, not ISO-17075
In 2018, Ferro started a project to analyze the chrome hexavalent Cr(VI) content in commercial chromium salts. This initiative was prompted by discussions with customers and external laboratories about the correct methods to analyze Cr(VI) in basic chrome sulfate (BCS) products.
The resulting study was conducted together with the University of Lleida (Igualada campus) in Spain, which specializes in tanning research and education, and two laboratories in Germany.
Our main goal was to establish and share scientific proof of the correct way to analyze Cr(VI) in BCS, and the variables of the tanning process that influence its subsequent appearance on the skin.
The results of the joint study were published as an article in the Journal of the Society of Leather Technologists and Chemists (JSLTC) in early 2020. The article, entitled “The study of the chrome hexavalent content in commercial chromium salts,” covered the thesis, the experimental process, and the results. The conclusion validates Ferro’s longstanding belief that Cr(VI) must be analyzed by ISO-19071, and not using ISO 17075.
