A NEW RANGE OF COMPLEX INORGANIC COLOR PIGMENTS for FOOD CONTACT THAT MEETS INDUSTRY, REGULATORY AND END CUSTOMER REQUIREMENTS
Color trends are important when it comes to creating packaging in contact with food, however with all direct and indirect food contact applications, regulatory issues and requirements must be met while delivering colorant performance.

Regulatory considerations require multi-faceted efforts, where safety and expertise must be provided across the value chain. Industry, regulatory and end-use customers all have varying requirements that must be fulfilled for pigment formulations used in complex food plastics packaging applications.

Formulated to Meet Rigorous International Regulations

Ferro’s new CICP (Complex Inorganic Color Pigments) FCP (Food Contact Pigments) product range is the outcome of an intensive two-year development effort. Our multidisciplinary team has worked to ensure that all raw materials comply with product specifications and there is no cross-contamination during production. New processes have been implemented to ensure the absence of heavy metals and to provide consistent, accurate quality control.

As a result, each batch of the new CICP FCP product range is AP89(1) certified with even lower limits than required, and also complies with the EU 2011/10 regulation regarding plastic packaging in contact with food. In addition, these pigments are FDA approved (FDA 21 CFR 178,3297) although the final pigment dosage may depend on each pigment’s chemistry. Our team of pigment experts are available to provide additional data and consultation.

Dani Lladó, Marketing Manager for Plastics, at Ferro states: “Thanks to our capabilities and expertise in technical and regulatory requirements, all the testing to demonstrate suitability of our pigments can be done at our facilities, and we are able to adapt the testing to the requirements or needs of our customers or other players in the value chain.”

Meeting Customers’ Plastic Packaging Coloring Needs
The combination of this new CICP range of pigments that meets food contact regulatory requirements for plastic packaging and our ability to demonstrate their suitability in end-use applications gives confidence and security to all the players downstream along the complete supply chain. Backed by proven technical and regulatory support, this complete package of proven products with technical expertise makes Ferro a top trusted source for meeting demanding regulatory-compliant applications while delivering excellent performance.

Beyond the CICP range, we also offer a full range of pigments that are suitable for use in plastic in contact with food. These include ultramarines, iron oxides, bismuth vanadates, near infra-red (NIR) detectable blacks and some organic pigments.
