Abstract:
With an ever-increasing concern on reducing energy consumption, various states and municipalities are pushing more aggressive regulations to ensure industry compliance with this goal. For example, the California Energy Commission has set a goal to double energy efficiency by 2030. Infrared reflecting pigments are an important tool for achieving these goals.
This presentation provides a broad overview of the various applications of infrared reflecting pigments that are relevant to the coatings industry. Some, like camouflage, are old and others, like LiDAR, are relatively new. Both applications are focused on detection technology. The primary use of infrared reflecting pigments however is to minimize heat build-up from sunlight. Each surface type (roofing, walls, pavement) is considered a distinct application with different goals, regulations, and challenges. For each, it is important to understand which pigments optimally suited for the application, and whether blends of pigments interact favorably or detrimentally to the total solar reflectance.
